Fine level of feeling

One of the by-products of regular meditation is what we call fine level of feeling. It’s a refined ability to perceive or sense the more subtle goings on that are taking place in a moment.
 
Twenty minutes, twice each day we sit to meditate, and in the process, we are laundering the stresses of the body and re-establishing ourselves in unbounded, silent pure consciousness. This brings with it a fine-tuned state of awareness that allows us to pick up on more than just the gross, most obvious things taking place. We feel more, we see more, we hear more, we sense more. We begin to see tiny similarities in things that appear totally different to most people. We can sense into the energy of a room full of people. We can pick up on the quiet cues a friend may be trying to communicate, the deeper desires behind the words they say (and don’t say). We can discern true intention or motive in others. We notice the rhythmic way the leaves rustle when the wind moves through the trees, or the microscopic pattern on a flower petal. We become adept at noticing the gentle cues our heart or intuition may be communicating with us.
 
Often times, these abilities naturally weave their way into our experience so subtly and effortlessly that we don’t even realise we are noticing them – it just becomes a natural part of our experience. As you go about your day today, notice what you notice. Notice what subtle cues you pick up on in work meetings, interactions with family, the quiet murmurings of your heart, the things you observe on your daily walk.
 
This fine level of feeling enlivens the world around us, and with it comes the ability to see the usually overlooked beauty that is always taking place around us. It also gives us the skill to be able to engage in an experience or interaction, and to tune into what is really needed, or what the moment is really asking us to contribute, so that we can serve the need of this time. This puts us in a position to uplift others and give from the deepest sense of fulfilment of who we are.
