The power of community

Humans are hardwired for connection. As tribe animals, having a herd around us means safety, security and belonging. Alone, we are vulnerable and limited. But together, we are powerful. Community and belonging are one of the most important needs for our survival, after food and shelter. It’s where we celebrate our common experience of being human, and make memories for ourselves to treasure later.

Through community we also fulfil one of our basic, but often forgotten, human needs: to be of service. To contribute, to share and to help, support and nurture the tribe around us. When the tribe thrives, we all thrive. Since one of our basic human needs is community, when we are of service, we feel an immense sense of satisfaction and joy.

Modern times mean our tribe might not look like we imagine it once did. Members of your tribe might be scattered all over the globe. You might be a member of a few tribes. Regardless, we should all feel a sense of belonging to a community, a sense that we are part of something greater, with those who treasure us and value us, and are there to support us, as we are for them.

When we learn Vedic meditation, we become part of a community. A global network of like-minded souls on a journey much like our own. In this community we gather regularly to meditate, share, connect and grow together. It becomes a safe place for people to express themselves, discuss challenges and seek support from those on a similar path. And in today’s world, that ends up being priceless for many, and something to treasure.

How do you nurture and celebrate community, connection and belonging in your own world?
